WIAW: Back in the Game

First things first: Thank you so very much for all of your kind words yesterday! Many people claim that they just write for themselves, but frankly, I do not! I feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment whenever I read a comment that somebody has truly related or benefited from my ramblings.

Now, if you’re joining me for the traditional “What I Ate Wednesday” (WIAW), then might I suggest that, upon finishing this post, you  hop on over to my breakup post. My eats are interesting and all, but trust me, this post is way more of a page turner…or should I say “page scroller.”

For those of you new to the blog after finding my breakup post, let me quickly clarify WIAW. It’s a sort of “party” for the healthy living bloggers world. We all write about our daily eats and then post them to this blog in what is called a “link-up.” Then, throughout the day we all check out each other’s wacky food choices and comment on them. Believe it or not, it’s actually very interesting!

Alright, now that the intro is out of the way, let’s hop into breakfast. I was up very early to take a YOGA class. Yes, yoga – new year, new me, or whatever. Every year I try to make myself a yogi, and I usually give up after about 2 classes. But, given all the changes in my life, I figured, no time like the present.

It was a bit early for breakfast, but I forced myself to down a Chobani with fruit to avoid being that awkward girl who sucks at yoga and also has her stomach growling the entire class.

The Chobani was accompanied by that giant coffee, and I enjoyed them both while doing a bit of work pre-yoga.

At the gym, I banged out three quick miles before yoga, because if I don’t do something high impact/active, I get antsy. I can never understand those women with fabulous bodies who claim they “only do yoga.” My body craves high intensity workouts as a de-stressor.

Anyway, yoga was…an experience. It was a vinyasa yoga class, and my plan was to tell the teacher that I was a beginner before class started. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance. As I struggled to get into the basic downward dog pose, she came over to me and started adjusting every limb of my body. At this point, I softly whispered “I’m new.” She looked at me sympathetically and said, “I can tell.” #yogafail

Somehow I made it through the class, but it was very challenging! As someone who has run multiple marathons and half marathons, I consider myself an “athlete.” But, put me in a yoga studio, and all of that goes out the window. Graceful, I am not! Though I may have toppled over more than a few times throughout the class, and my poses definitely didn’t mirror the yoga all-star in the front of the room, I felt very proud of myself at the end of class.

I also liked the teacher, and her words really resonated with the cheesy breakup person in me at the end of class. “Today we challenged our balance,” she said. “But you can’t ever feel truly balanced without a little imbalance. And, you can never become strong without being a little weak. Thank you for challenging yourselves and making yourselves vulnerable with me today.”

At that point, I totally had a Sex and the City epiphany moment and decided I’m goin’ back to yoga next week!

While at the gym, I also tackled another new goal: drinking more water. As a healthy living blogger, I’m ashamed to admit that I NEVER drink water. Being so health-conscious, I’m very aware of how bad this is for me, but I just can’t resist diet soda (or pop as us mid-westerners call it) and other chemically-powered drinks.

So, early in the morning, I prepped my water bottle for the day, cutting up some strawberries and cucumbers and then squeezing half of a lime. It was the perfect combo, and I drank more water yesterday than I probably drank all last week!

Post-workout, I had a few errands to run, so I sipped on some chocolate coconut water.

It was my first time going chocolate, and while I liked it, I think I’m more of a plain coconut girl.

Lunch was the usual – a veggie-packed salad, topped with cottage cheese. We were out of lettuce, so I used shaved brussels sprouts as a base.

I was surprised at how delicious it tasted – would definitely use these babies as a salad base again!

Amidst running around all day, I did have a few relatively nutritious snacks including:

IMG_0424

Egg Whites + Cheese + Veggie plate, topped with salt n’ pepper. I always eat a bunch of egg whites if I need a protein kick.

IMG_0430

Carrots with hummus on-the-g0. Love these convenient packages.

IMG_0431

Banana slathered in Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter. Note: this is the first time I have ever tried cookie butter, and I cannot believe I have lived my life without it for 30 years. Definitely dipped that spoon in a couple more times after taking this picture.

Spicy Buffalo Wheat Thins – I do not know when or why I got hooked on these things, but they are definitely a guilty pleasure. If you like the taste of Frank’s Hot Sauce, you’ll love these spicy snacks.

By the time dinner rolled around, it felt as if I had already fit two days into one. Thus, I cooked up a little breakfast for dinner.

IMG_0434

Egg sandwich, coated with a Laughing Cow Tomato and Basil Cheese + roasted sweet potatoes + strawberries n’ bananas.  It left me perfectly full…but not too full to end every day (even if it is zero degrees out) as it should end:

With frozen yogurt.

I swear there is a smidgen of frozen yogurt below the cherries, gummy bears, sprinkles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

It was a very sweet end to another nearly perfect day in my new home! I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that each day in Omaha seems to be better than the last. Here’s to hoping this streak continues!

  3. Hi Jamie, I found you a few weeks ago, and was just checking in again today to get a little inspiration for myself on this snowy day. But if there’s anything I know about, it break ups! I quite possibly should have started my blog on getting through them! I married rather late in life, so went through about, oh, I don’t know, 1000 of them. Anyway, stay strong. From what I can tell, you will emerge stronger than ever.
