Things I Forgot on the Island of Manhattan

It’s fair to say NYC is worlds away from NE – not just in distance, but in the lifestyle. For example, when my best friend, Becca, was lamenting to me about having to get gas before work on a Monday, I equated it to having to wait in line to fill up my Metrocard pass on a Monday morning before getting on the subway (The line’s always extra long on Monday because everyone seems to have missed the boat on getting their s*** together to fill the pass over the weekend when the crowd is much lighter).

I forgot all about "the good life"

Anyway, I usually try to get back to The Big O at least every 6 months, but this time around, it’s been almost 8. Thus, I am out-of-practice with living the Nebraska life aka “the good life.”

Here’s a couple of things I completely forgot about: Continue Reading →

Sometimes Healthy – A Day in the Life

Ever wondered about what it would be like to walk in the stilettos of a fabulously successful, savvy, fashionable, New York power woman??

Well, keep wondering (or watch Sex and the City), because I certainly have no idea. I am undoubtedly a New Yorker – this is a fact. However whether or not I am savvy, fashionable and a “New York power woman” is certainly debatable. There are some days, I feel like I own this city:

I bang out 6 miles in Central Park before the clock strikes 7:30, strut my stuff in a brand new J Crew dress and cute Tori Burch flats as I walk to the subway while jammin’ out to country music, complete a full day of work with enthusiasm and determination, eat balanced, nutritional meals throughout the day and finally head out to happy hour with some friends (where, of course I exercise moderation and drink only one glass of pinot grigio)

This is what it's like to "own" the city

But, most days, it’s a combination of triumphs and trials. New York is the type of place where your luck AND emotions can change in a flash. One minute I’ll feel like Carrie Bradshaw and two minutes later, spurred by some random chain of events, I’ll suddenly feel as out of place as a Gleek who is just one misstep away from having a purple slushie dumped all over her…

Maybe I DON'T belong here...

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million times: New York is the land of the unpredictable. If you can stick to a routine here, I applaud you.

Nevertheless, some of the blog posts I’ve always found most interesting are those where I get a glimpse into the everyday activities of my favorite bloggers. So, just in case anyone was curious about a day in the life of a Sometimes Healthy New Yorker Girl, voila! In typical Sometimes Healthy style, this “day in the life” may be both long-winded and dramatic. Continue Reading →

Runner’s Block in Gotham City and Sick Days

Abort mission. We are breaking up Mr. Treadmill.

On Sunday, I took the day off from running after a bit too much celebrating in the great state of TX. I refused to feel runner’s guilt, considering rest days are a part of being a well-rounded runner. Next, yesterday morning, as you’ll recall, the couch called my name and enticed me into getting a little more shut eye. But I was determined to triumph over all of the “adversity” and get in a speedy, decently long run on my bff the treadmill last night….

No such luck. After 1.25 miles, I felt completely run down and out of gas. Watching myself in the mirror, it looked like I was running for the first time the way I was huffing and puffing! All of a sudden, I was the little engine that could NOT. Then it hit me: I HAD RUNNER’S BLOCK! Continue Reading →

Wedding Recap Part II: The Party Continues!

The Celebration Continues!

Well, the wedding might have concluded on Friday night, but that certainly didn’t mean the celebration was over. Here’s a recap of how it all went down on day two in Houston.

A Sometimes Healthy Start to the Day

I started my next full day in Texas just like the first: capitalizing on the delicious breakfast buffet. Again I was one of the only people in the restaurant at the early hour of 7:00. What can I say? The promise of a fresh made-to-order omelet woke me up sans alarm at 6:45 AM. Technically, that was 7:45 NYC time, which I think makes that statement a bit more normal… Continue Reading →

Sleeping More than Ryan Reynolds…

It is normal to play with Shake Weights in the office...

This just in: Heidi Klum gets an average of 10 hours of sleep per night, according to People mag. I had two questions when I read this story: 1) Is that her secret; 2) HOW does she find the time to sleep 10 hours?

Well, if that’s what it takes to be a supermodel,  guess I’ll have to rethink my career aspirations 😉 Maybe I should be a model for Shake Weights instead?

But in all seriousness, how does a woman with four children, a modeling career, a tv show and countless other ventures, have time to sleep 10 hours a night? The article, in this week’s issue, was actually about the amount of “beauty sleep” stars get. I felt better when I saw that Drew Barrymore only gets 3 hours and the beautiful Jessica Biel claims she’s nearly an insomniac (maybe she’s missing Justin?). Best of all, Ryan Reyonds said, “I think about all the blinking I’ve done during the day and try to add it up in my mind.” Well, Ryan, for someone who lacks in the sleep department, you sure look pretty good 😉

Do all non-sleepers look this good? Is there a club I can join? Source

Sleepwalking through My Morning Routine…

And speaking of sleep, I have gotten a lot less of it lately!

As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve had a few late nights these past few weeks. Last night was another night of burning the midnight oil, so let’s just say I didn’t exactly wake up all bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Continue Reading →

A Sometimes Healthy Morning Routine (Sometimes)

Up and at em!

Am I the only one that finds it absolutely fascinating to glimpse into other people’s morning routines? There is something so intriguing to me in learning about how someone else balances it all in the AM. Julie’s routine, for instance, amazes me nearly every day. That girl fits in so much in a short span of time! Gym, dog walking, making an attractive and tasty breakfast, and finally making herself look fabulous (although I doubt it takes much ;-)). Please read her post for tips on streamlining the routine, because let me tell ya, I still haven’t figured it out!

My interest in reading about her routine led me to believe some might be interested in the typical morning for a 20-something New York girl who TRIES to be healthy. Please note: Today’s routine does not always happen. There are many days where I get home too late to wake up at such an early hour or days that I just don’t feel like waking up. Also, when I do fit it in, I’m generally 10-15 minutes behind schedule and running around frantically. But, here’s how it all went down this morning…. Continue Reading →
