Wacky Food Combos: The Pie Filling Edition

Confession: Sometimes I hesitate to post my wacky recipes because I worry that I’ll “alienate” my readers. After all, let’s be honest, some of them are are a bit “wacky” to say the least. Well, the latest batch of Wacky Food Combos might just take the cake…or shall I say, the pie.

No judgments, please. This is a “safe space.” 🙂 I hope I don’t scare any of you away with these crazy combos. They are not for everyone – Sometimes Healthy is an acquired taste. So please, if you don’t like them, can we still be friends? There is so much more to this Sometimes Healthy Girl than unique food creations

Pie Fillings/Canned Fruit a Hidden Secret Weapon

Heaven in a can - do not fear the canned food. It was invented for those of us who are bad at baking or don't have time to do it.

When you’re a little bit dangerous in the kitchen, any item that eliminates a step in the cooking or baking process is a welcome treat. The problem with many pie fillings and canned fruit is that they are too sugary? Thus, I use the low sugar versions.

If you are against Splenda-fied deserts, stop here, go back to my homepage and read about my Lazy Girl’s Workout Plan or why every should have a theme song. I totally respect the whole all-natural thing – it’s just not for this Sometimes Healthy Girl. However, if you’re not afraid of a little fake sugar, let’s have some fun with pie filling! Kitchen Sink Salad- Thanksgiving Style

Wish I had time to make this...but I'll settle for the Kitchen Sink Salad version 😉

Nope, it’s not a typo, you read it right. Tonight I was craving another Kitchen Sink Salad, but with a Thanksgiving twist. I don’t know what it is about Mondays and giant salads, but this appears to be a consistent pattern for me. I think there are 2 reasons for this: a) I’m usually tired on Mondays and b) I crave something healthy after a weekend of Sometimes Healthy or just plain UNhealthy meals.

I got my “inspiration” for this salad back when I worked in Chicago and and enjoyed the perks of a giant salad bar in the building next door. I developed all sorts of creations in this salad mecca, and every now and then I recreate them. Continue Reading →

Wacky Food Combos: I Can’t Believe It’s Not…

Indoor Picnic in 2007...the last time I baked a pie!

As you can probably tell by now, I am not quite the “ complete package” healthy living blogger. As mentioned in my first post, I can barely get it together enough to PLAN a meal, much less cook it, much less take a picture! However, as an avid reader and fan of these blogs, I know it is very interesting to see how others eat. I’m still not sure WHY. I just know the first time I read SELF mag’s Eat Like Me blog a couple years ago I was hooked. There is something so fascinating about glimpsing into a healthy person’s daily food choices. Some of my favorites now include PB Fingers, Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices (love her recipes) and Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life

I can’t share any recipes with you…because I don’t have any right now…because I don’t cook very often. However, what I can share are some truly unique food combos that remind me of favorite foods that I’m either A) too lazy to make or B) too worried about the nutrition facts (full disclosure here ALWAYS). In a tribute to my old faithful I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Spray, here are the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not!” food combos…

**Some of this may not look as good as it tastes…remember, don’t judge a book by it’s cover 🙂 Continue Reading →
