Sometimes Healthy Girl Does Chicken (Baked, Not Fried)

It was recently brought to my attention that I need to eat more protein. I don’t post what I eat on a daily basis here on the Sometimes Healthy Living blog for many reasons:

  1. I can’t keep track of my meals myself!
  2. My food is never photogenic (unless I try really hard).
  3. Many times, unless it’s a Wacky Food Combo, my meals are boring.

During one of our recent marathon catch-up phone sessions, my best friend, Becca, who is never wrong about anything, informed me that I’m not incorporating enough protein in my daily meals.  Continue Reading →

Wacky Food Combos: The Pie Filling Edition

Confession: Sometimes I hesitate to post my wacky recipes because I worry that I’ll “alienate” my readers. After all, let’s be honest, some of them are are a bit “wacky” to say the least. Well, the latest batch of Wacky Food Combos might just take the cake…or shall I say, the pie.

No judgments, please. This is a “safe space.” 🙂 I hope I don’t scare any of you away with these crazy combos. They are not for everyone – Sometimes Healthy is an acquired taste. So please, if you don’t like them, can we still be friends? There is so much more to this Sometimes Healthy Girl than unique food creations

Pie Fillings/Canned Fruit a Hidden Secret Weapon

Heaven in a can - do not fear the canned food. It was invented for those of us who are bad at baking or don't have time to do it.

When you’re a little bit dangerous in the kitchen, any item that eliminates a step in the cooking or baking process is a welcome treat. The problem with many pie fillings and canned fruit is that they are too sugary? Thus, I use the low sugar versions.

If you are against Splenda-fied deserts, stop here, go back to my homepage and read about my Lazy Girl’s Workout Plan or why every should have a theme song. I totally respect the whole all-natural thing – it’s just not for this Sometimes Healthy Girl. However, if you’re not afraid of a little fake sugar, let’s have some fun with pie filling! Sleeping As Much as Heidi Klum…Finally

So 10 hours of sleep is your secret? I've "got milk" and sleep - watch out Heidi Klum!

Good afternoon, my friends! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend! Do I sound a bit chipper to you?

You may remember a while back I did a post about the average hours celebrities sleep, based on an article from People.  In short, Ryan Reynolds doesn’t sleep and Heidi Klum sleeps apparently an average of 10 hours a night. Something tells me Ms. Klum is exaggerating, but that is not the point of this post…

Guess what?! Last night I slept as much as Heidi Klum!

That’s right, I went to bed at 8:00! Well, okay, I watched Felicity (most underrated show ever) in bed for 1 hour and then fell asleep at 9:00. I’m anticipating a busy July at work, so I’m trying to fit in extra sleep whenever I can. This Sometimes Healthy Girl may be living in the city that never sleeps, but that doesn’t mean she can’t sneak in a few extra z’s every now and then.

A New Sometimes Healthy Girl

This morning, I woke up bright and early at 7 am feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to run! Sometimes I feel like the entire second half of my week is spent in a fog of tiredness, so it was a pleasant change to have a bit of energy this beautiful Saturday morning. Continue Reading →

The Lazy Girl’s Workout Plan

In the great words of Bruno Mars, last night, “I didn’t feel like doing anythiiing. I just want(ed) to lay in my bed.”

Now don’t go getting all worried on me. There was no sadness, deep introspective thinking about the direction of my life or lack of motivation to go to the gym. I was just straight tired from staying up late to watch the Voice working sooo hard. Yet, despite running on only 3 Dunkin Donuts coffees and 5 hours of sleep, I still wanted to work out.

Thus, I found myself in a bit of a conundrum – I WANTED to workout but lacked the ENERGY to complete a quality workout.

2.5 Step Sometimes Healthy Comfort Food

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean a girl can’t enjoy some of her favorite comfort foods. Does my stress level decrease just because it’s summer? No! Therefore, this Sometimes Healthy Girl declares the right to indulge in comfort foods, even during the hot dog days of summer.

But as delicious as comfort foods are, there are two problems with most of these goodies:

  • They are generally extremely UNhealthy
  • They usually take a lot of time to make

If Paula Deen has taught us anything it would be that comfort foods generally imply no less than 5 sticks of butter and at the same time, the recipes are much more intricate than simply plopping said butter into a pan, piling on some cream and cheese and throwing it on a plate.

Never fear, Sometimes Healthy Girl is here. Sorry Paula – love your personality, love your recipes and love you. But eating/preparing your food would not help decrease my stress level.

Everyone Needs a Theme Song

While reading this month’s SELF magazine (cover to cover, per usual), I was very intrigued by a statement from their cover model, Zooey Deschanel:

“Everyone needs a theme song! It should make you feel like a million dollars.”

Nothing too profound – remember this Sometimes Healthy Blog doesn’t always run too deep. But nonetheless, I like her thinking. Shouldn’t we all have a soundtrack to our lives? Part of the reason I like running so much is that I get to listen to my music and pretend that I am awesome. There is no secret to my ability to run two hours on a treadmill. I just turn to the “Success is My Only Mother F**** Option” playlist on my ipod (quote from Eminem song – yes, I know, it’s classy) visualize my future full of awesomeness and zone out.

My Theme Song

Zooey’s theme song is “Friends of Mine” by the Zombies. Never heard it, but I’ll have to give it a spin. My “life theme song” certainly changes with my mood, but for the purposes of this exercise, I’ll pick one: Continue Reading →

Fro Yo With a Smile

Who wouldn't want to run by this?

It was the perfect day for a run here in NYC.

Clear skies, hot temps (but not too hot), and low humidity. The kind of day where it feels like the entire city is out running, biking, walking around, shopping or day drinking. Yet, still, around 10:30, I found myself indoors performing my typical pre-run procrastination routine: SoapNet’s Breakfast in Bed (One Tree Hill and 90201 marathon), bowl(s) of cereal and some major cuddle time with the couch monster.

As enjoyable as it was, I felt a bit guilty wasting even a portion of such beautiful weather on the couch. Thankfully, my best friend, Michelle, called and asked me to meet her down on the Lower East Side track for a run and more importantly, some catch-up time. Michelle was in Europe for 10 days recently, so we had a lot to chat about. Continue Reading →

Tennis Ball Therapy

Just popping in quickly to give an update on the never-ending foot saga. Chloe has caused me to feel rather uninspired on the writing front, so I’ll illustrate how today’s doctor’s appointment went with a few quick pics. Enjoy!

And that, my friends, is a recap of my 60 minute doctor’s appointment! The good news? This problem is 100% treatable and just involves a little bit of work on my end to keep it from flaring up. The bad news? I think the name, plantar fascitis, sounds kind of gross. Plus, the doctor was extremely good-looking (thus, the lipstick face) and there will never be any hope for us now that he has seen my “in-major-need-of-a-pedicure” feet. You win some, you lose some!

Anyway, in all seriousness, I feel so fortunate that this a minor issue I can fix, basically with a FROZEN TENNIS BALL!! I read all the time about runners with much worse injuries, so I am one lucky Sometimes Healthy Girl. I had a feeling this might be the problem, but I don’t believe in the whole self-diagnosis thing. Google does not = Doctor.

I was so excited about my diagnosis that I went straight to work to utilize our brand new “workout” room.

Our New Office Workout Room: Look at those feet go!

Now that the good news is out, I’m going to go enjoy a nice, hot, sweaty…workout!

Happy Feet Friday Everyone!

Question:

Do you ever self-diagnose? Have you ever been right? Ever been wrong?

Have you ever had a cute doctor?
