Girls on the Run 5K Recap: A Lesson in Runpowerment!

This morning I started off my day in my favorite way: Running.

But, as much as I love running alone, what made today’s run EXTRA SPECIAL was the company. Today was the Girls on the Run Manhattan 5K, and I was privileged to be able to run as a Running Buddy alongside a very talented young runner, 9-year-old Makoyan. A very shy and modest little runner, Makoyan nearly left me in the dust as she completed the 5K at a pace remarkably fast for such a young runner. What impressed me even more was her modesty, determination and clear passion for running. The Girls on the Run 5K was by far one of my favorite races that I’ve ever run because I had the opportunity to see all of these young woman achieve a huge accomplishment: their first 5K. Why I Love Summer Running in NYC

Mich and Jamie smiling big after a refreshing run in Central Park. Sidenote: This is not a flattering picture. But in the effort to convey emotions through pictures, I put it up anyway. Anything for my blog!

Goooood Afternoon and Happy Tuesday! Reason to turn that Monday Frown Upside Down? It’s already Tuesday! Hooray for Holidays! Did you know that tomorrow is National Running Day? Even though my foot has been hurting me, as I mentioned in my “Fallin’ Off the Horse” post last week, I’ve decided to keep up with the running until a doctor tells me otherwise (I promise I’m going to the doctor next week!). Because, honestly, nothing screams summer in the city to me like a hot, sweaty run in Central Park

Breaking the Pre-Run Procrastination Record

These days, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts in the blogosphere about procrastinating before runs and motivating one’s self to go running. What is it about the summer days that make us all a little slower moving when it comes to putting on those running shoes and hitting the pavement? Continue Reading →

Friendship and Frozen Hot Chocolate

Look at that smile!

As I mentioned on Thursday, my best friend, Emily, from Nebraska, was in town for a work trip. Believe it or not, I showed her more in NYC than just 16 Handles and PB & J Overnight Oats in a Jar. Although she was in town for only 3 days, we packed a lot into those three days. Here’s a recap:

Two Years Without Frozen Hot Chocolate

I’ve been in NYC for two years (plus a four month internship back in college), and I am ashamed to say I’ve never tried the infamous Serendipity frozen hot chocolate! It’s right around the corner from one of my favorite places in NYC, Dylan’s Candy Bar, but I’ve never gone inside because there is always a long wait. Well, Emily’s first night in NYC provided the perfect opportunity to sample this delectable goody!

Word Up Wednesday: Runpowerment and Call to NYC Bloggers

run·pow·er·ment [ruhn-pou-er-muhnt]

-noun

A feeling of extreme euphoria and strength that one derives from achieving a running goal. This feeling transcends age, distance and gender. It often results in an increase in drive, dedication, self-esteem and confidence.

This week’s word is Runpowerment: Everyone has a running story. Running changes lives. It helps people see that they’re capable of conquering something they never saw possible, whether it’s a 5K or a marathon. And whether you’re 27 or 12, there is something incredibly empowering and inspiring about being able to push your body to the limit (I’m sure many readers of this blog know exactly what I’m talking about. )Even better, all you need to run are some running shoes, mixed with a bit of determination and confidence. And that’s why Girls on the Run (GOTR) is such an incredibly important organization. For those who aren’t aware, here’s the official description of GOTR:

Runner’s Block in Gotham City and Sick Days

Abort mission. We are breaking up Mr. Treadmill.

On Sunday, I took the day off from running after a bit too much celebrating in the great state of TX. I refused to feel runner’s guilt, considering rest days are a part of being a well-rounded runner. Next, yesterday morning, as you’ll recall, the couch called my name and enticed me into getting a little more shut eye. But I was determined to triumph over all of the “adversity” and get in a speedy, decently long run on my bff the treadmill last night….

No such luck. After 1.25 miles, I felt completely run down and out of gas. Watching myself in the mirror, it looked like I was running for the first time the way I was huffing and puffing! All of a sudden, I was the little engine that could NOT. Then it hit me: I HAD RUNNER’S BLOCK! Continue Reading →

Wedding Recap Part II: The Party Continues!

The Celebration Continues!

Well, the wedding might have concluded on Friday night, but that certainly didn’t mean the celebration was over. Here’s a recap of how it all went down on day two in Houston.

A Sometimes Healthy Start to the Day

I started my next full day in Texas just like the first: capitalizing on the delicious breakfast buffet. Again I was one of the only people in the restaurant at the early hour of 7:00. What can I say? The promise of a fresh made-to-order omelet woke me up sans alarm at 6:45 AM. Technically, that was 7:45 NYC time, which I think makes that statement a bit more normal… Continue Reading →

Sometimes Healthy Gone to Texas

Yehaw, Sometimes Healthy (dressed as Daisy) is headed to Texas.

This is NOT what I'm wearing on the plane...

Airport bars beware. Passengers be ready. Texas here I come!

Goodbye NYC

I HEART NYC so much that I hate to leave it, even for 3 days. So of course I went on one last run in my beloved Central Park Even though I was lacking sleep due to being up late worrying about my flight, I made it through. Enjoy the pics!

Good morning Empire State!

so pretttty

magical fairytale land!

tired but all finished 🙂

I hope to blog while I’m in Texas so you can hear all about the beautiful Indian wedding, all of the great food and of course the festivities. Texas here I come!

April Showers and Learnin’ to LUV the Treadmill

I had a great post planned for today. Let’s just say it involved the great outdoors. But then mother nature intervened….

Rainy big city

Oh April Showers – how dare you interrupt my exciting plans? But, alas, it was a rainy day in the Big Apple, so I needed to motivate myself to brave the windy rain and head to the gym for a run. Continue Reading →

Turn that Monday Frown Upside Down: The 2nd Edition

The sun wasn’t exactly shining here in the big Apple this morning, but it was warm. I took advantage of the warm weather with a 6 mile jog in Central Park

Gotham City!

Don’t the clouds look kind of cool? I still can’t believe I get to run here every day. Followed the run with a delicious bowl of oatmeal. Sorry I didn’t take a picture – it was just two packets of instant oatmeal, apples and cinnamon. Plus I put it in a paper cup – didn’t think it would  be too interesting for anyone! I’ll try to make up for it with a new oatmeal recipe tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

Now, on to reasons to turn that Monday frown upside down: Continue Reading →
