Sleeping in With Cinnamon Rolls

I can do better than that, Mr. Quaker!

Last night, I couldn’t sleep SO I decided to sleep in, skip the morning workout and make a tasty breakfast instead. I have been craving cinnamon rolls ever since I took the train to the National Marathon and walked past the tempting Cinnabon store in Penn Station. The smell alone is enough to make a girl swoon! Perhaps I could have justified purchasing one after I returned from DC. After all, I had just run 26.2 miles! BUT, I think it is a bad idea to reward myself with food all the time: I eat to run. I don’t run to eat (Again, don’t always follow this logic but I try…)

So, today, instead of having UNhealthy cinnamon rolls for breakfast. I satisfied my cravings with Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal. I knew that boxed oatmeal just wouldn’t do the trick. I picked up the recipe from LiveStrong, but made a few substitutions and swirled in a little “healthy” cream cheese icing: Continue Reading →

Kitchen Sink Salad- Thanksgiving Style

Wish I had time to make this...but I'll settle for the Kitchen Sink Salad version 😉

Nope, it’s not a typo, you read it right. Tonight I was craving another Kitchen Sink Salad, but with a Thanksgiving twist. I don’t know what it is about Mondays and giant salads, but this appears to be a consistent pattern for me. I think there are 2 reasons for this: a) I’m usually tired on Mondays and b) I crave something healthy after a weekend of Sometimes Healthy or just plain UNhealthy meals.

True, an Easter Egg Salad might have been more appropriate (still coming), but hey, if you can have Christmas in July, why not Thanksgiving in April? I got my “inspiration” for this salad back when I worked in Chicago and and enjoyed the perks of a giant salad bar in the building next door. I developed all sorts of creations in this salad mecca, and every now and then I recreate them. Continue Reading →

Turn that Monday Frown Upside Down: The 2nd Edition

The sun wasn’t exactly shining here in the big Apple this morning, but it was warm. I took advantage of the warm weather with a 6 mile jog in Central Park

Gotham City!

Don’t the clouds look kind of cool? I still can’t believe I get to run here every day. Followed the run with a delicious bowl of oatmeal. Sorry I didn’t take a picture – it was just two packets of instant oatmeal, apples and cinnamon. Plus I put it in a paper cup – didn’t think it would  be too interesting for anyone! I’ll try to make up for it with a new oatmeal recipe tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

Now, on to reasons to turn that Monday frown upside down: Continue Reading →

The Plaza vs. Dylan’s Candy Bar: SundayFunday!

My life is JUST like this television show, seriously 😉

I don’t know about other NYC women, but I definitely enjoy shows like Gossip Girl and Sex and the City infinitely more now that I live here. There is something extremely gratifying about seeing Nate kiss Serena in the exact same park I run in every day. Or watching Carrie run in her 6-inch heels down the same street I live. Plus these shows make my little city seem so glamorous. The extravagant brunches, the unbelievable shopping, the chique clubs, can you believe the fabulousness of it all? Well, you may be just shocked to find out that I rarely frequent these “exclusive” venues. Indeed, while some savvy New Yorkers are downing mimosas at an over-priced brunch, I’m finishing a long run and experimenting with Wacky Food Combos. But with company in town from Nebraska, we decided to pretend for a little bit 🙂

First up: brunch at the Plaza… Continue Reading →

A Perfect Saturday in NYC

When I have guests here in NYC, it is very important for me to show them a good time (and prepare my apartment). After all, this IS the greatest city in the world, so it is my job to make sure they experience it. It is a lot of pressure. I don’t want to let my great city down 🙂

First off, on Friday we went out to dinner in the West Village. We decided we’d just wander around until we found a good place. Unfortunately, while not planning dinner can sometimes lead to some hidden gems, it can also lead to some misses….

How to Prep a Sometimes Healthy NYC Apartment for Houseguests

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I am mucho excited for one of my closest friends from Nebraska to come to stay with me this weekend. We’ll be doing lots of fun New York things, including a “classic” NYC brunch. Please stay tuned for a recap post full of delicious food and drink. But first things first…Last night I had to prep my apartment for my little guests. Here’s how a Sometimes Healthy Girl (frantically) preps her NYC apartment for weekend visitors:

She cleans her tiny, yet extremely messy apartment, to make it appear bigger. (No I will not provide a before/after snapshot)

A "Sometimes Healthy, FINALLY Clean" NYC Apartment

When she runs out of time to make creatively named “Big Red Velvet Cupcakes,” she goes to her favorite cupcake shop and buys the most mouth-watering cupcakes she can find.

Friday FLAW-Day: The 2nd Edition

Remember: Ripped Jeans (Flaws) = Character!

Happy Friday! Not only do you have 2 days of weekend bliss to look forward to, but also, you get to read about more of my “flaws.” As you’ll recall, last week I promised to share a few of these every Friday, because I truly do feel it’s our flaws/quirks that make us special. Here are a couple more of my unique characteristics:

Fab Flaw #4: My Perfect Sunday

My idea of a perfect Sunday consists of lying on a couch all day and watching a mix of reality television and romantic comedies while eating an entire bag of pretzels dipped in cream cheese. Continue Reading →

Girl vs. Spaghetti Squash

As alluded to in my post earlier today, I will now share the recipe that was both my dinner last night AND my breakfast this morning 🙂 Didn’t it look delish? (maybe not but it obviously tasted good enough to entice me to eat it twice in 8 hours)….

A dinner so good, I ate it for breakfast too!

For the past few days, I’ve opened my fridge and seen a giant spaghetti squash glaring back at me. I have been meaning to do something with this ugly yellow vegetable for the longest time, but I’m just too unambitious by the time I walk in the door from a long day at work. Plus – I hate trying to cut foods that have a hard shell. I’m worried the knife will slip and disaster will strike.

Last night, I finally decided to bite the bullet. I figured if I was going to attack this beastly vegetable, I’d make it worthwhile and create a Spaghetti Squash Casserole. Continue Reading →

Leftovers for Breakfast!

Confession: I ate my leftovers for breakfast today…I opened the fridge and the dish was just callin my name. I am hoping to have a normal breakfast one of these days. As you know, I ate dessert for breakfast yesterday 🙂

This dish is something I’ve wanted to cook for a loooong time. I’ll be posting the recipe later today when work slows down. Until then, happy “Almost Friday!”

Can you guess the name of this dish?

Question:

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten for breakfast?

Dessert for Breakfast! (Sometimes Healthy) Oatmeal Banana Split Sundae

Sometimes I have to pinch myself :-)!

For those of you lookin for a little something different for breakfast tomorrow, I think I  have a winner….

This morning, I needed a pick-me-up from a long week at work…so I went for a short 4 mile run in beautiful Central Park. Great ideas often come to me when I’m running. It must be my amazing playlists. Anyway, I thought of the oatmeal waiting for me back in the fridge. I made it last night using Almond Breeze to give it a calcium kick and some creaminess. I was feeling very blah about the breakfast that awaited me.
